Odoo upgrade decision guide

Odoo 17 end of support

Odoo 17 left standard support in September 2026. Odoo's subscription agreement adds a yearly fee of 25% for databases on versions older than the three most recent. Estimate it with your own figures, then choose: upgrade, pay for a period, or reassess the platform.

Direct answer

Staying on Odoo 17 means no security updates and, under Odoo's current agreement, a yearly fee of 25%.

For Odoo 17 Enterprise customers, the choice is between the cost of an upgrade project and the cost of the fee plus the risk of running without security updates. The estimator below compares the first two with your own figures.

The fee terms come from Odoo's current agreement. Older signed agreements may differ, and this page is not legal advice.

The clause and the dates

What Odoo's agreement says.

"Once per year, and no earlier than 6 months after the release of a new major version of the Software, if the Customer's database is on a version older than the Covered Versions, the Customer agrees to pay an extra fee equal to 25% of the annualized price, calculated based on the Customer's current per-user price and number of Users and Light Users."
Odoo Enterprise Subscription Agreement, section 5.1, version 13 dated September 24, 2026. The agreement defines Covered Versions as "The 3 most recently released major versions of the Software."

  • Formula: 25% × (full users × full user price + Light Users × Light User price), annualized. Light Users count under the clause.
  • This is not a quote from Odoo or OPS. Your agreement and invoices decide the real amount.
  • Staying also means no security updates, and a later upgrade spans more versions. The calculator does not price those risks.
  • OPS is an Odoo partner and a NetSuite partner, and earns fees from upgrade work.

Decision framework

Three ways to respond.

Upgrade to Odoo 18, 19 or 20

When it fits
Odoo fits your processes and your customizations can be ported.
What to do first
Request an upgraded test database, list custom modules and integrations, and agree acceptance checks. Odoo 19 or 20 gives a longer standard support window.

Pay the fee for a period

When it fits
A peak season, an audit or a wider decision makes upgrading now risky.
What to do first
Budget the yearly fee, set a fixed upgrade date, and record that security updates have stopped.

Reassess the platform

When it fits
The upgrade exposes deeper fit problems, or porting customizations costs close to a new implementation.
What to do first
Define requirements first, then compare a clean Odoo implementation with other ERPs, including NetSuite, on the same terms.

Who is affected.

01

Odoo 17 Enterprise

Out of standard support since September 2026, with no more security updates. The yearly fee could apply from about March 2027, by our estimate.

02

Odoo 16 and older

Already older than the three covered versions. Check your agreement and invoices to see whether the fee already applies.

03

Odoo.sh and on-premise

Odoo offers extended support for an additional fee on these hosting types only, and on Odoo.sh only for limited versions.

04

Odoo Online

Extended support is not available. Odoo's upgrade documentation warns that an automatic upgrade starts if no action is taken before the due date.

Readiness check

What makes your upgrade harder?

Mark each area that applies to your database.

  • Custom modules

Do you run custom or third-party modules?

Odoo's upgrade documentation says a database with custom modules cannot be upgraded until those modules are available for the target version.

  • Studio changes

Have you built fields, screens or automations in Studio?

List each one and test it in an upgraded test database. Odoo's pricing page places Studio in the Custom plan.

  • Integrations

Do other systems read or write Odoo data?

Retest each integration on the target version. Odoo 19 added the external JSON-2 API, and Odoo 20 adds a connection through MCP.

  • Accounting

Do you rely on custom finance reports, bank rules or payment status filters?

Odoo 20 renames payment statuses and adds a bank consistency rule. Test month-end steps before you switch.

  • Data volume

Is your database large or many years old?

Rehearse the upgrade on a full copy and check performance and data before you plan the cutover.

0 of 5 areas apply

Fewer known complications. Still request an upgraded test database and test your main processes.

FAQ

Common questions.

When did Odoo 17 support end?

Odoo's support policy lists the end of standard support for Odoo 17.0 as September 2026. Security updates are only provided during standard support.

What is the Odoo legacy version fee?

Section 5.1 of Odoo's Enterprise Subscription Agreement says that once per year, and no earlier than six months after a new major release, a database on a version older than the three most recent major versions pays an extra fee equal to 25% of the annualized price.

When could the fee start for Odoo 17?

Odoo 20 was released on September 24, 2026, which makes Odoo 17 older than the covered versions. Our estimate is that the fee could apply from about March 24, 2027, depending on your billing cycle. Check your own agreement and invoices; older signed agreements may differ.

Do Light Users count towards the fee?

Yes. The clause bases the fee on your current per-user price and your number of Users and Light Users.

Which version can I upgrade to from Odoo 17?

Odoo says you can upgrade to any major version still under standard support, or one that left standard support less than six months ago. Today that means Odoo 18 (support until September 2027, planned), Odoo 19 (September 2028, planned) or Odoo 20 (September 2029, planned).

Can I buy extended support instead?

Odoo offers extended support for an additional fee, only on Odoo.sh for limited versions and on-premise. It is not available on Odoo Online.

Does Odoo charge for the upgrade itself?

Odoo's pricing page says upgrades are included in all plans at no extra fee. Maintenance of custom code and implementation services are not included, so porting custom modules and testing still cost time or money.

Does OPS benefit if I upgrade?

OPS is an Odoo partner and a NetSuite partner, and earns fees from upgrade and implementation work. We may recommend upgrading, paying the fee for a period, or reassessing the platform, depending on your situation.
